 
Open a new image with and put down the
text you want. It works best with wide bold fonts. When
you put down the text leave Floating off. Now flood fill
using the left mouse button and the flood fill tool set
to linear gradient and 180 degrees. You should now have
something that looks like Fig. 1

To create the 3D effect go to Selection | Float
and hold down the shift key and press the down arrow key a
couple of times. Now just flood fill with the same settings
above but use the right mouse button. You should now have
something that resembles Fig. 2.
