Glass Effects

Open the image you want as a background and pick your font style. I set the font tool as selection with anti alias on. Once the text selection is done save it to an alpha channel for insurance. We now want to promote your text selection to a layer so you have the text filled with the selected part of the background. You should have something similar to Fig. 1.

Fig. 1

Fig. 1

You now want to distort this promoted layer a little, I used Image | Blur | Gaussian Blur set to about 1.5 for this. I now add a new Adjustment layer | Curves set as show in Fig 2 below or something more to your own liking.

Fig. 2

Fig. 2

I now add a new raster layer and apply Image | Effects | Cutout set to fill interior unchecked, shadow color to white (or some other light color), opacity 100, blur about 5, horizontal/vertical offsets to 1 or 2. I then turn the opacity down to about 50% on this layer. I also suggest you add another new raster layer and repeat the cutout changing the horizontal/vertical offset to -1 or -2. Again turn down the opacity on this layer to about 50%. We are now ready for the last step and that is another adjustment layer only Levels this time and set it as shown if Fig. 3 below or something that looks good to you.

Fig. 4 below shows a screen shot of my layer control palette. If yours looks about the same then you can now merge all the layers together or see the notes below for some other tricks before doing the merge.

Below is the finished effect I got with only the steps listed above. The amount of adjustments made to the curve and levels layer may vary depending on the background image you chose so watch carefully what each adjustment you make to your image.

Finished

Finished Effect

Note: You might wish to try the chrome effect to get some additional distortion or perhaps one of the deformation tools. You might also want to add a little sparkle effect to the finished product as well. One more suggestion is to merge all the layers except the background then make a couple of duplicate layers with their blend modes set to difference. This will sometimes give a little more shine to the effect. I hope you found this tutorial helpful for doing glass effects with Paint Shop Pro.
