Cutting hair
Long hair can be pretty, but sometimes we want it short. In the example on the right, Camui Gackt's hair looks quite artificial, and no doubt he'd look better with much shorter tresses. How should this be accomplished?
Let's get the freehand selection tool (the lasso) set to Point-to-Point, antialias on. Now select a zigzag through the hair, being careful that the spikes go with the flow of the hair - that way the cut will look natural. Depending on how even an edge you want, you might want to make the spikes longer or shorter, but don't cut in a straight line - believe me, it does not look good.
Once you've got your selection, feather it by 5 and hit delete. This by all means should be the last step, but we can see it's not enough - he looks as if part of his face was missing. Can't have that, so must fix it. There's several ways we can go about that, but I opted for copying part of the other cheek, deforming it (because his face is tilted to the right), manual color correction to match the red shadow and smudging the seam with a low-density Retouch brush.
And so we have one freshly styled J-rocker. Hmm, doesn't he look a bit like Tasha Yar from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" now?
