Chapter 1: Casual

The camellia trees' last blooms were surely beautiful, Seishirou Sakurazuka mused. Of course not exactly heart-moving for him, seeing as his emotions were next to non-existent, but still beautiful...

"OI! SAKURAZUKA!!!"

A sharp yell shattered the silence, nearly causing Seishirou to spill his coffee. He sighed and picked up his books. Spring break was over and school was starting again.

And Tooru Magami banging on his front door was just the first sign.

"Finally!" she exclaimed as he opened the door. "We're going to be late for school!"

"Really, Lady Magami..." He smirked slightly. "Is this ladylike behavior?"

She snorted, then pouted and batted her eyelashes. "But Seeeiiii, we're, like, best friends, right? And I've been thinking about you throughout the break... at night..."

Seishirou mock-flinched. "What's with the sudden heterosexuality, Saya-chan not putting out?" He barely evaded a well-aimed kick.

"Watch your frigging language, Sakurazuka. Saya-chan and myself are fine, thank you."

Tooru seemed to be waiting for something. Seishirou quickly took stock of his friend's figure. She had not grown any taller than her previous five feet and five inches, but something was different.

"You've cut your hair..."

"Sure I did!" she laughed. "Remember how I was always ranting about it? Too much of a bother, so I cut it off. Saya-chan likes it."

"It suits you." And it did, framing her elfin features in a storm of midnight-black locks.

"And you've grown again!" she trilled, hugging him impulsively. "Six foot tall, I'll be damned!"

"Ah well, now you can't spit in my eye..."

"Remind me why I walk you to school, anyway."

"Because Saya-chan lives on the other side of the town, and this way you can copy my Biology homework before we get to class."

"Right."

The first familiar face they saw once they reached the campus was scowling. The once-black hair above it was dyed a bright neon pink.

"Tetsuo-kun! How's life?" Tooru asked, still hyper from the prospect of seeing all of her friends again.

"Boring." Tetsuo nodded at Seishirou. "Sakurazuka."

"Yatouji. Still on a sugar high?"

"Go jump off a cliff."

Tooru giggled. "I swear, if Tetsuo wasn't straight, you two would make a perfect pair!"

Both boys blanched. "NOT!"

A pair of arms sneaked around the girl's shoulders. "Tooru-chan, are you torturing Sakurazuka-kun and Yatouji-kun again?"

"Who, me? Saya-chan, I thought you knew me better than that!" Tooru laughed, turning to embrace the other girl. She buried her face in Saya's long blonde hair. "Kami-sama, I've missed you, darling."

Seiichiro chose this precise moment to appear, and promptly blushed. "S-sorry!" he exclaimed.

"Aoki-kun!" Tooru trilled, detaching herself from her girlfriend. "How's life? And your one-and-only love?"

"Yeah," Seishirou joined in, "is that twelve-year-old temptress still stalking you?"

"Kasumi-chan isn't stalking me," Aoki grumbled. "But I'm afraid she does still tell everyone she's my girlfriend."

"Speaking of girlfriends, where's bleach-head?" the black-haired boy enquired.

"Kazuki has already started classes," Tetsuo hissed.

"And a good thing it is, or she might just get jealous!" Tooru laughed.

Suddenly they all fell silent as the click-clack of high heels approached them.

"Children, shouldn't you be in class?" the tall, dark-haired woman asked, smiling indulgently. "You wouldn't want to start off the new school year on a bad note, would you now?"

"No, Kanoe-sensei..." they all chorused.

Seishirou sat under a tree in a secluded part of the campus park and unpacked his lunch box. Usually he had lunch with his friends, but on the first day it seemed everyone wanted to be with their lovers. Even the perpetually blushing Seiichiro had accepted Karen Kasumi's offer of sharing lunch, though he glanced around all the time to make sure no-one was getting a wrong impression from his sitting with a twelve-year-old girl.

He briefly wondered how it felt to love. He knew it was almost impossible for him to feel the emotion, but then there were his mother's words as her life faded...

You will be killed by the person you love the most.

Who would it be, then?

His musings were interrupted by a loud boyish voice extolling the high points of the campus. He grinned as he recognized the chairman of the elementary school division; it was impossible to be enrolled in any Clamp school and not notice him, the other two Campus Detectives who rarely left his side, or his enormous all-female fanclub.

Sure enough, Nokoru's blond head emerged from behind a corner. He walked backwards towards Seishirou, his face turned to the boy that followed him. The other child had black hair and the largest green eyes Seishirou had ever seen, in a face so pretty it gave him the air of a china doll.

"And then there's the science fair," Nokoru continued his tirade. "This is a great opportunity-"

Nokoru was cut short by tripping over Seishirou's outstretched legs.

"Watch it, detective!" the older boy laughed. He noted Nokoru's companion's look of distress. "Nokoru-chan is cursed with clumsiness," he explained.

"And Sakurazuka-sempai is always there to remind me," Nokoru grumbled.

"And to help you up when you fall," Seishirou added as he pulled him to his feet. "Who's your young friend?"

"My name is Sumeragi Subaru," the green-eyed boy said resolutely. "I'm new to the school - I just arrived in Tokyo."

"I hope you'll enjoy it here. I'm Sakurazuka Seishirou." Seishirou was sure the boy's name reminded him of something.

"It's nice to meet you," Subaru said politely.

"No, Subaru-kun!" Nokoru admonished. "Sakurazuka-sempai is not someone you should talk to. He's a villain!"

"Ouch!" Seishirou winced. "Are the esteemed Clamp Campus Detectives still bitter about that time when I raised a spirit in the gym? It was an accident!"

"Accident? That thing-"

Something dropped down from the tree's branches. It was an eight-year-old, blue-haired boy.

"Kaichou," Suoh said grimly. "You've got paperwork to do."

"But Suoh..." Nokoru grinned disarmingly. "I'm showing the new student around the campus!"

"You've already shown him everything."

Nokoru looked around wildly. "I'm... protecting Subaru-kun's virtue from Sakurazuka-sempai's evil schemes?" The blond boy blushed as he realized how the sentence came out.

"Hey, I'm not that much of a pervert!" Seishirou protested.

"Paperwork, Kaichou," Suoh said simply before dragging Nokoru off.

Subaru stared after them with amazement.

"Nokoru-chan doesn't like to do his paperwork, and as Division secretary, Suoh has to make sure the office isn't flooded with papers to sign," Seishirou explained. "And yes, they're always like that."

Subaru smiled. "I think I'm going to like it here. It's already better than my previous school."

"Where was that?" Seishirou asked.

"In Kyoto," the little boy sighed.

"That bad?"

"I... the other children..." There was a shadow of pain in the deep green eyes. "They hated me."

"Why?"

Subaru wouldn't meet the older boy's gaze. "I'm not normal."

Suddenly Seishirou rememebered. "Sumeragi, as in the onmyoujitsu clan?"

Subaru startled. "How-?"

"I know some onmyoujitsu, too," the older boy shrugged. "Enough to get me in trouble with Nokoru-chan and his friends. I tried to talk to the gym's resident spirit-" read, talk it into dumping a bucket of water over Tetsuo the next time the pink-haired boy was there "-but for some reason it took offense and started throwing stuff around."

"And you're still friends with Imonoyama-kun?" Subaru asked with wonderment. "In my old school, all I ever did was stop and listen sometimes, or practice a bit by myself, because Grandmother said I should... and it was enough for people to hate me."

Seishirou smiled. "You'll find Clamp Campus much different in that respect. There's still some bigotry and superstition around, but we don't let it get to us."

"We?"

"Me and my friends. Many of the old families send their children here, and we usually hang around each other. There's Tooru-chan, she's from the Magami clan-"

"They're the kage-nie, yes?"

"Exactly. Then there's Seiichiro-kun from the Aoki clan of windmasters, and Saya-chan is a seer and stargazer trained at Koya. Yatouji... his family is researching ways of integrating magic with technology. All that's just in the second year of high school."

"Wow..." Subaru said. "I'd like to meet them someday."

As if on cue, a sharp gust of wind tore through the air around them.

"Leave me alone!!!" Seiichiro screamed, running to the two under the tree and hiding behind Seishirou. "I am not your boyfriend!!"

"Buuut Seiichiro-saaaan!" Karen wailed, flinging her long red locks around dramatically. She vanished in a gust of flame and reappeared right next to the distraught windmaster. "I looove you!"

Seishirou grabbed Subaru's hand. "Let's get out of the shooting range, Subaru-chan." They vanished in a swirl of sakura petals.

They rematerialized behind a handy corner of a campus building. Subaru lost his balance and stumbled a bit, leaning on Seishirou.

"I'm sorry," the older boy apologized. "It was getting out of there or getting fried."

"Aoki and Kasumi are at it again?" a voice asked from a window above them.

"Who else?" Seishirou shrugged.

There was a rustling sound, and then Tetsuo landed beside them, followed by a slim, white-haired girl.

"Seishirou-kun! It's nice to see you again!" the girl said as she hugged her friend.

"Same here, Kazuki-chan," he answered, then laughed at Tetsuo's scowl.

A loud yelp was heard from the area where Karen was still chasing Aoki. Soon afterwards, a slightly scorched Tooru emerged from behind the corner, followed by a distraught Saya.

"But I did foresee it!" the blonde wailed.

"Yeah, you turned all pale and started pointing to the park! I thought something bad was about to happen!" Tooru fumed.

"Oh, kami-sama, I'm so sorry..."

Tooru held out for all of three seconds. "I forgive you. Come over here."

The girls kissed. Seishirou had the presence of mind to cover Subaru's eyes. Despite her apparent preoccupation, Tooru caught sight of it.

"Oh, and who are you?" she asked.

"Sumeragi Subaru," the little boy said politely.

"I'm Magami Tooru," she smiled. She stepped back, taking in Seishirou and Subaru. "You two look so cute together, don't they, Kazuki-chan?"

"Yes!" the white-haired girl agreed.

Seishirou scowled. "Don't mind them, Subaru-chan, they're just crazy..."

Subaru grinned, oblivious to Tooru's intended meaning. "I think I like it here."

Author's notes:
This is a total Alternate Universe, in which everyone is more relaxed about their powers (as Destiny is not involved) and some things did not happen - namely, Tooru's binding to the Earth, Kazuki's illness and Karen's mother's superstitions. Of course, this had its impact on their personalities. Btw, as for Seishirou he's of course wearing a mask all the time, but even in his inner thoughts he's more emotional due to not having been Sakurazukamori for a long time.
