Death is the character that binds the Discworld books into one series, appearing in every one of them. His personality is complicated -- he's very dutiful and understands the dangers of changing history (which doesn't prevent him from sneaking in a life or two). Yet he is fascinated by the very creatures he destroys, and has devoted a lot of his time to studying humanity. Although absence of any proper glands on a skeleton means he has no emotions, he can nevertheless express things not unakin to anger, depression, affection or dark humor (the last one is often used at Rincewind).
